Project Title:
When Brooklyn Was Queer
Project Type:
VR Prototype [ Non-Union ]
Project Description:
  • When Brooklyn Was Queer is a groundbreaking immersive XR experience inspired by Hugh Ryan’s celebrated book, exploring the vibrant queer history of Brooklyn through movement, sound, and atmosphere. The prototype will feature a visually stunning minute-plus long scene, weaving storytelling and dance to embody the spirit of queer resilience and joy across time.
  • The choreography will embody the emotion of each moment—whether joyous, reflective, or revolutionary—while staying visually dynamic for the XR medium. Leaning specifically into the dance styles that were popular during Brooklyn’s Vaudeville scene (circa 1894) the most popular dance styles were diverse and reflected the eclectic and energetic spirit of the time.
  • For Context: Around 1894, tap dance was in its early stages, evolving from a mix of African American, Irish, and English dance styles that Vaudeville performers adapted and popularized.
  • This era saw the blending of Buck and Wing (characterized by fast footwork and rhythmic stomping, originating from African American dance traditions) with Irish step dance and English clog dancing. Performers in Vaudeville would experiment with different types of footwork, creating rhythmic patterns and syncopated beats with their shoes.
